Late 19th/ Early 20th Century Suspender Buckle
As well as doing my own metal detecting I also like the idea of sifting through other peopls finds, therefore I have purchased a few small lots of unresearched items to investigate and research myself.
I did think most of it would generally be junk or common items people didn't want to keep for themselves but was amazed to find this item in the first lot.
Item Found In: Barlby, Yorkshire
I first noticed the letter 'S' and upon closer inspection realised it was stamped 'SOLIDE' across the middle bar of the buckle, so I started researching this name which led me to the UK Metal Detecting Finds Database, here is a link. This suggests the buckle was "used as an adjuster on the rear straps of men’s waistcoats" but I have looked into this further and have found most research points to the Buckle actually being used as a Suspender Buckle. One of the better websites I found that provides this conclusion is here, it is mainly American websites that mention SOLIDE buckles as being for suspenders or under-garments but it is the same design so it must be the same manufacturer.
You can also see the letters PA at the top of this buckle, in other examples of this Buckle it should read PARIS.
Unfortunately this one doesn't have as much detail as some of the other photo's I have found online but I don't want to soak the buckle in the Ultra 7000 or Sea Clean fluid in case it damages it.
